Some educators teach textbooks; others teach children how to live, feel, and imagine. Garima Dahima belongs unmistakably to the latter. As a puppetry facilitator, storyteller, experiential learning practitioner, and Managing Director of Arghya Studio, she has spent over twenty-six years creating engaging, arts-integrated learning experiences across India. Behind her extensive credentials as an internationally accredited Jolly Phonics trainer who has empowered over eight thousand five hundred teachers, a Garbha Sanskar practitioner with more than two decades of guidance, and a scholar holding dual postgraduate degrees in Nutrition Science and English Literature, lies a deeply human story. It is a tale of quiet childhood shyness, fierce maternal love, unyielding resilience, and the courage to build an authentic life without a pre-existing map.

Roots, Values, and the Courage to Learn

Garima’s story began in her childhood, surrounded by the loving presence, wisdom, and discipline of her maternal grandparents. Their timeless values laid the bedrock for her core beliefs, choices, and aspirations. Her parents provided an environment that nurtured curiosity and learning, encouraging her to explore rather than placing rigid boundaries around her dreams.

"Looking back, I realise that one of the greatest gifts my parents gave me was an upbringing that allowed me to explore, learn, dream and develop the courage to discover my own path."

Her thirst for knowledge led her to pursue two vastly different postgraduate degrees one in Food Science and Nutrition Science, and another in English Literature. These complementary fields enriched her understanding of life from both analytical and emotional perspectives, fostering a deep appreciation for human health, language, expression, and story. Yet, her journey was never solely about academic qualifications or linear success. Like many who step onto uncharted roads, Garima navigated deep emotional struggles, self-doubt, failures, and moments when the future appeared completely uncertain.

"There were moments when I experienced failure, deep emotional struggles, self-doubt and times when I felt I had reached the end of the road... Yet, somewhere within me, a small flame of hope continued to burn. Faith gave me hope, hope gave me courage, and hard work helped me turn that courage into action."

From Shadowed Shyness to Maternal Courage

Confidence was not something Garima was born with; it was something she gradually forged through experience. As a child, she was quiet and preferred to stay in the background, keeping her rich inner world of thoughts and ideas to herself. As she grew older, she began experimenting, researching, and traveling beyond her comfort zone, taking small steps toward discovering her own voice.

However, her most profound internal awakening occurred when she became a mother. Motherhood redefined her understanding of courage. Suddenly, her growth was no longer just about her own dreams. She had a daughter watching her, learning from her, and discovering the world through her example.

"Motherhood changed my understanding of courage... How could I teach my daughter to live her dreams if I was not courageous enough to live mine? That question became a turning point."

Realizing that the most powerful lessons given to children are demonstrated through action, she took complete ownership of her aspirations. Today, when her daughter tells her she is proud of her, it fills her heart in a way that no professional achievement can match. She feels that same profound pride and joy for her son, wanting both her children to know that they never have to shrink or become someone else to be worthy of their dreams.

Facing the Whispers…

When Garima began stepping away from traditional, rigid educational structures to champion storytelling, puppetry, theatre, and activity-based learning, her unconventional path was met with heavy skepticism. Relatives and acquaintances hurled doubts and labels that stayed with her for a long time.

"‘Hawa mein udti hai’, ‘Opportunist hai’, and ‘She is crazy!’ These are a few of the comments that stayed with me. When you choose to walk a path that others cannot understand, people often interpret your courage as foolishness, your curiosity as instability, and your willingness to explore as an attempt to take advantage of opportunities."

Rather than becoming bitter or defensive, Garima came to understand that people judge through the lens of their own limitations and expectations. The life she was building was never a carefully designed, rigid plan; it grew organically from curiosity and a refusal to measure her worth through competition.

"I have learnt that you do not always need a destination clearly marked on the map. Sometimes, you need to know your values, remain curious about the world, recognise the opportunities that resonate with you and have the courage to take the next step."

Stepping Across Mountains: Pain, Healing, and Grace

Garima’s path has been marked by high-pressure moments, sleepless nights, and tear-stained pillows. The shy child within her still feels nervous before new beginnings, but a stronger inner voice now guides her forward, constantly reminding her, "I will do it." Every learning program she pursued whether traveling across the country for specialized puppetry workshops, studying behavior therapy, or earning her diploma in Yogic Science from the University of Mumbai meant stepping away from her comfort zone, leaving home temporarily, and managing emotional weight alongside professional ambition.

Her hardest struggle, however, came from interpersonal relationships. Experiencing situations where she gave her time, care, and support unreservedly, only to face misunderstanding or insincerity in return, left deep wounds. She had crossed mountains to be there for people she cared about, only to realize that the relationship did not hold the same depth for the other person.

"I want to become wiser, not harder; more discerning, not distrustful; and stronger, without losing my softness. Because, in the end, I do not want my life's story to be about the people who hurt me. I want it to be about the person I chose to remain despite the hurt."

When reflecting on who believed in her along the way, Garima acknowledges a deep matrix of influences. The first person who had to believe in her was herself. Her grandparents, her mother, and her children gave her wisdom, love, and inspiration. But surprisingly, she also holds gratitude for those who doubted and opposed her, as their resistance forced her to examine her own convictions and stand firm on her own feet.

A Candid Reflection on the Psychology of Helping

Her perspective on helping others is equally refreshing and remarkably grounded. When asked about emotional moments with clients or students, she offers a candid view on the psychology of service, openly admitting that she helps people partly out of a sense of personal fulfillment.

"Honestly, I help people because, in a way, I am selfish. Yes, selfish! I want to feel good about myself. I want to experience the quiet happiness that comes from knowing that I could make someone's day a little easier, help someone discover a possibility, or support a person in finding their own strength."

To her, helping is not a performance of moral superiority, but a natural, mutual human exchange that fulfills our innate need for connection, meaning, and contribution. To maintain calm and balance during intense, high-pressure periods, Garima anchors herself in daily holistic practices: yoga, mindful breathing, meditation, and conscious eating. These practices keep her grounded in her three core life values: Compassion, Coordination, and Collaboration.

Arghya Studio and a Vision for Revolution

This lifelong philosophy found a vibrant physical home on August 3, 2025, with the inauguration of Arghya Studio in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Envisioned by Garima, Arghya is an open, experimental learning space that brings together educators, artists, parents, and communities to exchange ideas and learn through practice. The studio hosts immersive residential programs such as Puppet Banao Kahani Sunao, deep meditation retreats for women, and Jeevan Stambh reflective workshops for educators.

Looking toward the future, Garima’s ambition is clear and transformative. She aims to bring a meaningful revolution a kranti to education by reaching as many teachers as possible.

"I believe that one teacher can influence a thousand students, and a thousand inspired teachers can transform generations. My vision is to bring a kranti in education by reaching as many teachers as possible and empowering them with the tools of puppetry, storytelling, theatre and activity-based learning... My dream is to create ventilations in school and college classrooms openings through which fresh ideas, creativity, curiosity and joy can enter."

A Living Message for the Journey Ahead

To anyone reading her journey, Garima leaves a compassionate invitation to live authentically and gently in a world that often demands toughness.

"Do not be afraid to live a life that looks different from everyone else's. You do not have to have your entire life planned to begin... Do not spend your life trying to prove yourself to people who have already decided who you should be. Instead, invest your energy in becoming someone you can respect when you look into the mirror."

Her story stands as an enduring reminder that true strength lies not in hardening oneself against the world's difficulties, but in preserving your kindness while gaining wisdom along the way.

"Be brave enough to dream, humble enough to learn, kind enough to care and wise enough to remain true to yourself."
