A Legacy Seeded in Sikkim

Long before she walked into the underserved bastis (informal settlements) of Indore, Dr. Lalita Sharma Anant grew up in the serene landscapes of Sikkim, where her leadership skills flourished early as she served as the School Prefect and House Captain, a distinguished honour.
Selfless service was deeply ingrained in her roots. Born to educationist parents who dedicated their lives to lifting thousands of children into top administrative positions across Sikkim, Lalita grew up breathing the quiet power of education.
After her marriage brought her to Indore, she stepped into academia, ascending through schools, colleges, and universities to become an esteemed Assistant Professor. She had achieved what society defines as stability, success, and respect.
But a deeper calling was waiting under the open sky.

2009: Choosing the Unpaved Path

In 2009, while balancing her role as a university professor, Dr. Lalita’s eyes were opened to a heartbreaking reality: hundreds of young children the very future of India were doing physical labor or sitting idle in local settlements instead of holding a pencil or book in the hands of these special children.
Driven by an unshakable core of compassion, patience, and optimism, she refused to look away.
She walked away from the security of her prestigious job to launch Open Sky Learning Classes under the Abhakunj Welfare Society.

"Why leave a stable, well-paying job for this?"
The doubts and taunts from well-meaning friends and relatives were loud, but her conviction was louder.

Understanding that parents in extreme poverty often relied on their children for daily earnings or household help, Dr. Lalita took it upon herself to bridge the gap. She spent countless hours visiting homes across local neighborhoods, sitting with hesitant parents, and gently explaining how short-term labor keeps families trapped in hardship, while education offers a permanent way forward. Through constant counseling, warmth, and persistence, she convinced parents to trust her with their children's futures.
She started with just 8 children.

The Ripple Effect: From 8 to 580+ Lives Transformed

Where others saw financial constraint, Dr. Lalita saw an opportunity for community unity. When funds were scarce, she mobilized a legion of compassionate volunteers, interns, and local citizens who offered their time and heart without asking for anything in return. Even her mother-in-law joined the cause early on, teaching hands-on vocational skills to youth and women.
Today, Abhakunj’s Open Sky Learning Classes welcome over 580 children every year.

Her grassroots impact also resonated internationally, where she was recognised with the prestigious Global Women Influencer Award New York - 2019 for her visionary grassroots initiative.
Yet, despite national and international accolades, Dr. Lalita remains grounded in her original truth:
"I am not in competition with anyone. I do not run these classes for show or social validation. True reward lies solely in the real, lived transformation of the human beings who walk through our doors."
